In ages past, the Annual Conference that contained Chautauqua crossed the state border between New York and Pennsylvania. When Conference lines were rearranged, the House by-laws were changed to preserve the historic connection between the House and its two closest Districts by including both Upper New York and Western Pennsylvania as sponsoring Conferences.

The Erie-Meadville District Superintendent is an ex officio member of the UM House Board of Trustees, and three elected members of the Board are members of Western Pennsylvania churches.
